Airborne and Special Operations Museum

The Army's most modern and newest museum, the $22.5 million facility features interactive displays, rare artifacts and dramatic life-size exhibits, video productions, and adventures of special operations units.

Bethesda Church & Cemetery

Circa-1790 church features bullet holes from Civil War battle, Old Slave Gallery, and graves of area pioneers. Listed in the National Register, and the annual homecoming is held the last weekend in September.

Bryant House & McLendon Cabin

Two historic museum houses depicting the daily life of early county settlers during the 1700 and 1800's. The McLendon Cabin is the county's oldest standing structure in its original location. Operated by the Moore County Historical Association and the Friends of the Bryant House.

Campbell House Galleries

The location of the Arts Council of Moore County. Three spacious exhibit areas, and paintings and pottery for sale by local artists. In addition, tennis and basketball courts as well as a fitness court are available for public play.

Carolina Horse Park at Five Points


Hundreds of acres of protected land dedicated to world-class equestrian competition.  The Stoneybrook Steeplechase, a Sandhills springtime tradition, is held each year on the first Saturday in April.

Carthage Historical Museum


A permanent home for artifacts covering 200 years of local history. Several exhibits reveal the town's past as the home of a renowned buggy factory, which the town commemorates each May with a popular family festiva

Fort Bragg/Pope Air Force Base


This Army/Air Force duo comprise one of the world's largest military complexes. Ft. Bragg (largest Army base east of the Mississippi) is open to the public.

House In The Horseshoe

 

18th Century, former cotton-plantation home.  Annual events include a Revolutionary War Battle Reenactment the first weekend in August and a Christmas Open House & Candle lighting celebration in early December.

Malcolm Blue Farm

 

Antebellum farm that has been recognized by the National Register of Historic Places for authenticity and uniqueness. Structurally, it features the farmhouse, barns, an old gristmill, and a wooden water tower.  Annual events include the Historic Crafts and Skills Festival the last weekend of September and the Early American Christmas on the second weekend in December

National Railroad Museum & Hall of Fame, Inc.

 

Most photographed station in eastern US, and former Seaboard Air Line Railway depot. Exhibits include SAL diesel-electric locomotive and caboose #5241, railroad memorabilia, model railroad layout, re-created telegraph office and gift shop.

North Carolina Literary Hall of Fame

North Carolina Pottery Center

 

Permanent exhibits trace the history and development of NC pottery from the prehistoric Native Americans to the present. Changing exhibits throughout the year focus on various topics of both historic traditions and contemporary work by the state's potters.

North Carolina Zoological Park

 

 500-acre natural habitat zoo ranks among the top 5 in North America. Plant/animal exhibits feature North America (including polar bears, elk, Gila monsters, river otters and bobcats) and Africa (including African Plains and Pavilion).

Pinehurst Harness Track


Track of 110+ acres, and operated by the Village of Pinehurst. Standard-bred training from Oct.-May (see horses put through their paces in early morning; try the track-side restaurant for breakfast!). Events include annual spring Matinee Races, horse shows (May-Oct.) and polo matches.

Rankin Museum of American Heritage

 

Exhibits feature 19th-century pottery, antiques, medical memorabilia, natural history, paleontology, Native American/Arctic artifacts, Civil War relics and original turpentine still. Rated among N.C.'s top ten museums by The State Magazine.

Sandhills Horticultural Gardens


32 acres featuring the Ebersole Holly Collection, a specialized Conifer Garden, the Sir Walter Raleigh Garden (a formal English Garden), and a native wetland trail. Designed and maintained by the college's Landscape Gardening Department and Sandhills Horticultural Society.

Shaw House Property

 


A trio of historic museum houses depicting the daily life of early county settlers. The Shaw House was built by Charles C. Shaw and later owned by one of his twelve children, Charles Washington Shaw, who became the first mayor of Southern Pines in 1887. It has the charm of sturdy simplicity which was characteristic of the Scottish families who settled in this region. The Garner House and the Britt-Sanders Cabin (also known as the Loom House) were both built in the 1700's. Operated by the Moore County Historical Association

Taxidermy Hall of Fame of North Carolina and Creation Museum

 

Exhibits  feature N.C. wildlife (200+ animals), including state/national taxidermy ribbon winners and oldest rock on earth.

Town Creek Indian Mound State Historic Site

 

Archaeologically restored site brings to life the culture of the Muskogean Indians of the Pee Dee area from more than 300 years ago. Religious, ceremonial and burial center tells their story through interpretive exhibits and an 18-minute slide presentation, as well as reconstructed structures including a major temple on an earthen mound, a minor temple, mortuary, game pole and stockade with two guard towers.

Tufts Archives

James Walker Tufts' dream of Pinehurst unfolds in the letters, pictures, and news clippings displayed here dating from 1895. The archives also include original sketches and drawings of famed golf architect Donald Ross.

Weymouth Center

 

Former home of author and publisher James Boyd and home to the NC Literary Hall of Fame, the Weymouth Center sits on 24 acres surrounded by stately longleaf pines. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The facilities are available for rent for private functions.

Weymouth Woods Sandhills Nature Preserve

 

898 acres of wildflowers, streams, ponds, miles of hiking trails with informative stations, a beaver pond, a newly renovated museum with participation exhibits and a full-time naturalist. A Sunday nature study program is offered each spring and summer.
